Can you get a dive mask for a really strong prescription? Yes. We've made dive mask lenses from -28 to +22. The key is choosing a mask with smaller lenses and, for prescriptions beyond ±6, using high-index glass so the lenses stay thin and light.
The strongest prescription we've made was -28. I still remember how grateful that diver was to finally be able to dive and actually see.
What counts as a strong prescription?
Look at the SPH (sphere) number on your glasses prescription. If you also have a CYL (cylinder) number, add half of it to get your spherical equivalent, the number we use to judge strength. For example, SPH -7.00 CYL -1.00 works out to -7.50.
| Your prescription | What it means for your mask |
|---|---|
| +4.00 to -4.00 | Works in almost any of our masks |
| Beyond +4.00 or -6.00 | Choose a small-lens mask and use high-index glass |
| Beyond -8.00, or any astigmatism or prism | Too strong for stock-lens masks. You need custom lenses |
Stock-lens masks only come from -8.00 to +4.00, and they can't correct astigmatism, prism or bifocals. Custom lenses are made for each eye separately, so they can.

Best masks for strong prescriptions
Smaller lenses mean thinner glass at the edges, less weight on your face and less distortion when you look to the side. A deeper skirt also helps the lens sit at the right distance from your eye.
| Mask | Why it works | Frame price |
|---|---|---|
| Scubapro D-Mask | Comfortable ski-goggle strap, nearly edge-to-edge lenses, changeable skirt, durable. Three sizes. | $199 |
| IST M200 | Slightly smaller than the M100. Handles the strongest prescriptions. Fits narrow to medium faces. | $122.45 |
| IST M100 | Very similar to the M200, slightly larger, mirror lens option. Fits medium faces. | $108 |
Lens prices are added when you order.
The Scubapro D-Mask is a very comfortable mask with a ski-goggle style strap. Even with a strong prescription, the lenses run nearly edge to edge, so you keep most of your view. It's durable, and you can replace the skirt yourself. The IST M200 and M100 are very similar. The M200 is slightly smaller, which makes it our pick for the very strongest prescriptions.

Masks to avoid with a strong prescription
- Synergy II: a great mask and one of our top sellers, but it sits close to the face, so strong plus lenses can press on your eyebrow.
- Atomic SubFrame: the same issue, although it handles slightly stronger prescriptions than the Synergy II.
- Frameless masks: they sit very close to the face, which leaves little room for thick lenses.

Do you need high-index glass?
High-index glass bends light more strongly, so the same prescription needs a thinner lens. It adds $65 to your order. We recommend it above ±4.00 and require it above ±6.00.
Swim goggles and full face snorkel masks
Strong prescriptions work in prescription swim goggles too. We've shipped goggles with +15.00 lenses, and goggles start at about $200 including lenses.

Our prescription full face masks are also a more affordable option for those with strong prescriptions who only want to be able to snorkel. Read more about the Oceanreef Aria full face snorkel mask.

Questions divers ask
Can you correct astigmatism with a strong prescription? Yes. Your cylinder and axis are built into the lens, even with high cylinder powers. See scuba diving with astigmatism.
Can I get bifocals with a strong prescription? Yes. A strong prescription doesn't limit your bifocal options.
How long does it take? Standard turnaround is 2 to 4 weeks. If you're leaving soon, 5-day and 3-day rush service is available.
Can I use my FSA or HSA? Yes, for the mask and lenses. Accessories such as snorkels aren't eligible.
